The Jakarta Post News - The Indonesian squad ensured a berth in the second round of Davis Cup group two plays in the Asia/Oceania zone after it defeated Hong Kong 3-2 on Sunday.
Indonesian supporters at the Bung Karno indoor tennis stadium applauded excitedly when Elbert Sie secured victory for the team in a five-set thriller against Yu Hiu Tung 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The efforts of Indonesia's highest ranked men's player paid off as he made amends for his loss to Martin Sayer in the tie opener Friday.
The win gave Indonesia an unbeatable 3-1 lead and a ticket to the second round where it will face China, a 5-0 winner over Lebanon in Beijing. New Zealand, which beat Oman 5-0, will take on Kuwait, a 4-1 winner over Pacific Oceania, in the other round-two tie.
In the final rubber of Indonesia and Hong Kong's tie, Michael Lai reduced the gap for the visiting team by defeating Ayrton Wibowo 2-6, 6-3, 3-6.
"I was very pleased to ensure we won over Hong Kong," Elbert said.
"I made many mistakes in the second set and was feeling pain in my legs in the fourth set but I think I played much better than in the previous match," said the 21-year-old.
